Sound of Wishes Ensemble

Emily Zhao founded the Sound-of-Wishes Ensemble (SoWE) in 2017 with the goals to promote cultural diversity in our community and to make the world a better place. Through performance at various events, we wish to cultivate a better understanding of Chinese culture and music in our community. We wish more people would be able to enjoy the unique and gorgeous sounds of the Chinese Zither called Guzheng. Besides performing, we also offer free lessons to those who are interested in learning this ancient Chinese instrument. We will teach them how to play Guzheng, how to read Chinese music, and give cultural background for each music piece.

A major goal of SoWE is to help grant a wish to children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions. SoWE works with Make-A-Wish Illinois (one of 62 chapters across the United States) so that every eligible child with a critical illness could put their disease aside and enjoy the moment when their biggest wish comes true. We believe such positive experience will help the child fight against their disease and heal their body. All donations to SoWE, from either lessons, performances, or others will, be passed on directly to Make-A-Wish Illinois to help fund a child's wish. Each wish is another step toward making the world a better place.
